Los canarios desconocen la realidad africana, hablan con cierta sensación de superioridad respecto a ella y no tienen conciencia de su cercanía. Estas son algunas de las conclusiones de un informe elaborado por la Fundación Habitáfrica Canarias, iniciado en 2010, y realizado junto a diversas entidades, entre ellas, el Gobierno de Canariasy Proa2020.

El estudio, elaborado para medir las percepciones de la población canaria acerca de África, también señala que los canarios tienen la idea de que el poder político y económico de las grandes potencias mundiales no permiten avanzar al continente africano, que falta «verdadero interés en ayudar a estos países» y que «hay una desproporción muy grande entre lo que se saca de esos países y lo que se manda como ayuda».

En general, según el informe, los canarios piensan sobre los inmigrantes procedente de África que «si en los países de origen tuvieran medios, no saldrían, pero cuando llegan aquí los tenemos que acoger como nos acogieron a nosotros en otros países en épocas pasadas».

Los canarios, según consta en el estudio de la Fundación Habitáfrica Canarias, son partidarios de trabajar en los centros educativos contenidos «que ayuden a transformar la imagen de África«.
