Hace tres años y seis meses, La Voz de Lanzarote hizo una entrevista a José Francisco Reyes que dió bastante que hablar. Por aquel entonces Reyes era el orgulloso alcalde indiscutido e indiscutible de Yaiza, y lo había sido durante once años consecutivos, mayoría absoluta tras mayoría absoluta. Durante esos once años, los habitantes de Lanzarote fuimos testigos de la evolución experimentada por el municipio sureño. Hoteles, apartamentos, complejos residenciales…, poco a poco aquello fue creciendo a un ritmo endiablado, convirtiendo la tierra virgen del entorno de las playas de Papagayo en una zona turística construida ininterrumpidamente practicamente desde el Papagayo Arena hasta el faro de Pechiguera.

Honorio García Bravo puso la semilla y José Francisco Reyes la regó. Entre ambos nos dejaron la herencia que hoy cualquiera que se pase por allí puede ver. Casas a medio hacer y un entorno apocalíptico que se llevó buena parte de nuestro prestigio como destino turístico.

Lo peor de todo era que la mayoría de los lanzaroteños teníamos claro lo que allí estaba pasando. Aunque muy pocos se atrevían a expresarlo públicamente. No era una mera discusión entre visiones distintas en torno a nuestro modelo de crecimiento. Playa Blanca apestaba a corrupción. A dinero bajo la mesa. «El cabrero» se estaba poniendo las botas a nuestra costa, a costa de los que necesitamos que la isla sea un destino privilegiado para nosotros y para las generaciones que nos sucedan.

Si entre todos hubiéramos decidido que Yaiza merecía ser un foco turístico tan importante como Puerto del Carmen, por lo menos habríamos podido hacerlo bien, planteando posibilidades, con transparencia. Pero Reyes no quiso hacerlo así, no le interesaba. Convenientemente incentivado por determinados empresarios, tomó al asalto toda ley que se le puso por delante, enriqueciéndose y apuñalando nuestra gallina de los huevos de oro, la que nos ha dado de comer los últimos lustros, la que nos tiene que seguir dando de comer durante todavía mucho más tiempo.

Lanzarote Noticias lo adelantó hace un par de semanas. El exalcalde había confesado el mismo día que se vió en prisión con el resto de su familia. Y La Voz de Lanzarote, tres años y medio después de aquella entrevista, lo ha corroborado hace unas horas.

¿Quién le iba a decir a él que isla chanchullo un día dejaría de serlo? Nadie lo imaginaba. Yo mismo introduje un comentario en La Opinión de Lanzarote al hilo de un artículo escrito por Josechu Pérez Niz acerca de la mencionada entrevista:

Encima, en dicho artículo el señor Reyes todavía pedía más competencias. Se pasó media entrevista metiéndose con el Cabildo porque no le dejaban hacer todo lo que quería… afortunadamente para él, y para otros muchos, a esta isla perdida de la mano de dios no va a llegar nunca la fiscalía anticorrupción…

Me equivoqué. Eso sí, tuvo que marcharse Miguel Pallarés, y tuvo que mediar una denuncia por parte de Carlos Espino, pero al final la fiscalía hizo acto de presencia. Estremece leer la respuesta ofrecida por Reyes cuando el redactor de La Voz le pregunta:

Hay quienes se preguntan por qué si el Cabildo cree que Yaiza entregó tantas licencias de manera irregular, no presenta un recurso en la Fiscalía Anticorrupción…

Que lo hagan. Que me lleven a Anticorrupción. Yo duermo todas las noches tranquilo. Eso a mi no me quita el sueño. Lo que me quita el sueño es ver a tanto mediocre, tanta falsedad, y que aprovechen esto como una bandera política. Parece que Lanzarote no ha crecido sino en Yaiza. Como si no se hubiera hecho nada en el resto de la isla.

El caso Reyes debería aparecer a partir de ahora en todos los libros de texto de nuestros escolares. Jamás he entendido que en la escuela no se enseñe la historia que más toca de cerca a los niños, aquella que les explica por qué su entorno inmediato es como es. Las edificaciones a medio hacer deberían quedarse así, tal cual están, como un museo al aire libre que cuente a los visitantes por qué un día Lanzarote quiso ser un destino turístico diferente y por qué algunos casi consiguen convertirnos en una Marbella del montón, con campos de golf, puertos deportivos y hoteles a pie de playa.
