Cada vez que una persona que vive en Arrecife viaja un poco, no puede evitar sentir una sana envidia por la cantidad de rincones históricos bien cuidados que hay ahí fuera. ¿Por qué en la capital de Lanzarote no ha sido posible salvaguardar nuestro casco histórico y nos tenemos que resignar a verlo desde siempre en situación de ruina y total abandono?

Durante mucho tiempo se nos ha dicho que «la culpa es de Patrimonio, que no deja hacer nada«. Esa retahíla la hemos escuchado toda la vida. Que no dejan arreglar una puerta, ni tocar un ladrillo… ¿pero saben qué? es una fake new. Y la estrategia de todas ellas siempre ha sido la misma: dejar pudrir aquello para construir algo nuevo y supuestamente más lucrativo sobre las ruinas. Por supuesto, con la complicidad de los partidos políticos de siempre. Los de toda la vida. Que la gente vota una y otra vez para que sigan haciendo lo mismo que han hecho siempre, impunemente.

Son gente que no sienten el menor aprecio por Arrecife ni por su historia. Adquirieron aquellos inmuebles para lucrarse con ellos, única y exclusivamente. Y lo peor es que podrían hacerlo si se propusieran poner en valor lo que tienen, en lugar de destruirlo. 

En ciudades mucho mayores que Arrecife, el casco histórico es precisamente el que más oportunidades de negocio genera. Porque es lo que la gente demanda más cuando viaja. Cuando uno hace turismo no quiere ver las mismas construcciones e infraestructuras que tiene en su casa. Quiere una experiencia diferente, quiere historia, contexto… por eso los cascos históricos son lugares tan demandados. Es una evidencia.

Y pensando no solo en el negocio, sino también en nosotros como ciudadanos, nuestro patrimonio debería ser una prioridad mucho mayor de la que hoy es. Porque sobre esa palabra, muchas veces denostada, descansan nuestras raíces… las que nos permiten crecer altos y firmes. Sin ellas, igual que los árboles, no somos nada.
