La Federación Internacional de Touroperadores advirtió del perjuicio turístico para Canarias si continuaban las prospecciones

La Federación Internacional de Touroperadores remitió una carta al Secretario de Estado de turismo español en agosto del 2002, poco después de que el Gobierno presidido por Aznar aprobara las prospecciones mediante decreto.

En dicha carta el Secretario General de la federación de touroperadores, Alan Flook, manifiesta su gran preocupación ante tal hecho, y solicitan al Gobierno detener el proyecto petroquímico por el bien de la industria turística. A continuación traducimos parte de la carta, que se pueden descargar en el enlace:

Las islas canarias representan uno de los destinos más importantes del mercado europeo. La instalación de una industria petrolera con torres de perforación, plataformas e instalaciones de carga-descarga ciertamente resultaría en considerable daño para el desarrollo turístico de Canarias. Ciertamente, los turistas no están interesados en pasar sus vacaciones en playas desde la que se visualizan tales instalaciones petroquímicas. Por no olvidar el daño a la naturaleza y el territorio. La demanda de vacaciones a Canarias decaería considerablemente.

Para evitar dañar el desarrollo turístico en Canarias, les solicitamos con contundencia abandonar tales proyectos. La continua expansión del turismo desde los más importantes países de Europa sin duda ofrecen a Las Islas oportunidades económicas adecuadas, de forma que esas cuestionables acciones deben ser evitadas a toda costa.
