Hasta en la sopa. De hoy en adelante el nombre de Fuerteventura copará la primera plana de las más reputadas revistas musicales nacionales y de la sección de varietés de los informativos patrios. Y es que Lourdes Peláez y su alter ego Russian Red tuvo a bien llamar a su segundo disco de tal guisa, Fuerteventura. Y que quieren que les diga, eso es algo que me da envidia.

Nosotros tuvimos -en paz descanse- a Saramago, ni punto de comparación. El premio Nobel escribió en su blog en 2009 que si tuviera las piernas de entonces (las de la primera y única vez que subió Montaña Blanca en 1993) dejaría lo que estuviera haciendo “para subir otra vez y contemplar la isla, toda ella, desde el volcán de la Corona, en el norte, hasta las planicies del Rubicón, en el sur, el valle de La Geria, Timanfaya, el ondular de las innumerables colinas que el fuego dejó huérfanas. El viento me batía en la cara, me secaba el sudor del cuerpo, me hacía siempre feliz”.

Dejando a un lado los célebres Cuadernos del luso, otro autor consagró una obra con el nombre de nuestra isla, Lanzarote. Fue Michel Houllebecq, autor francés, también isleño pues nació en la Isla de La Reunión, departamento de ultramar situado al este de Madagascar, y considerado uno de los máximos exponentes de la narrativa francesa de nuestro tiempo. La novelita, recomendable por lo psicodélica y ácida, se desarrolla en poco más de cien páginas. Data del año 2000, final o comienzo (según se mire) de siglo y de milenio. La acción comienza con el protagonista, el autor mismo, queriendo reservar unas vacaciones en una de tantas agencias de viajes -en paz descansen también-. La subordinada habla: “¿Ha pensado usted en Canarias? (…) La gente no suele venir con la idea de Canarias. Es un archipiélago situado frente a la costa de África, bañado por la corriente del Golfo; el clima es suave todo el año. He conocido clientes que se habían bañado en enero…”.

En Fuerteventura los clientes también se puede bañar en enero. No quiero yo decir que el título de un disco de un referente indie (palabra ya totalmente desvirtuada) pueda favorecer la mejora de la imagen de la isla vecina pero no sería de extrañar que algunos acólitos del gafapastismo más ilustrado se acerquen a la agencia de viajes más próximas en su MacBook para comprobar in pectore las bondades del lugar donde la cantante preferida de su iPod maquinó su último trabajo. Y que quieren que les diga, eso es algo que me vuelve a dar envidia.

Ahora que las calles, las carreteras están empapeladas con el celofán de la poliquitería, inundadas de caras que quieren que deleguemos nuestro derecho democrático en sus personas, es hora de preguntarnos si el modelo de turismo, sustento de la mayoría de las familias canarias, es el único válido. Nuestra isla se vende como la vende la dependienta de la agencia de viajes de Houllebecq.

Ese patrón, otrora rentable, ahora nos hace dependientes de las crudas heridas abiertas de nuestra hermana África. Hay que renegociar nuestro futuro. Buscar la diferenciación del resto de islas y descubrir cómo. El patrimonio del buen clima y la playa es común y parece explotado. Se demandan otro caminos. Como Saramago, yo soy más de viento en la cara, de paisajes, de puertas verdes y paredes blancas. La Geria y Timanfaya me hacen siempre feliz. Posiblemente nos haga siempre felices a todos.
