Costa Teguise. Noche de un martes de verano de 2008, hace ahora justo un año. La copiloto (copilota la llamaría la ágrafa ministra miembra de turno) me avisa de la presencia de una extraña, intensa y bellísima luz con forma semicircular sobre el horizonte. Igual que aparece desaparece en cuestión de segundos, y da la sensación de caer desplomada sobre el mar, al sur de la isla. Minutos después de visto tamaño fenómeno lumínico, Lanzarote y Fuerteventura sufren uno de los más duraderos apagones eléctricos de los últimos años, que nos dejó a los comensales que en esos precisos momentos cenábamos en el restaurante Isla Bonita a dos velas, con todo a media luz. ¡Ay, qué romántico!, dijo una turista peninsular un ratito cursi. Pero comer a ciegas o a tontas, a tientas y a locas, no entraba en los planes de esa noche, por más y por mucho que se haya puesto de moda incluso en esta pobre islita rica sin gobierno conocido.
Al día siguiente a aquella noche de verano costateguiseña, Unelco daba unas breves explicaciones sobre el apagón conejero-majorero: algún problema no especificado en el cable submarino que une Lanzarote con Fuerteventura. Claro, esa vez no habría sido creíble la táctica habitual de echarle la culpa al tractor o pala mecánica de turno, que es la excusa que invariablemente la compañía eléctrica arguye siempre, llueva o truene, como por inercia y para dejarnos a todos callados. Se escenificaba de nuevo el tradicional desprecio de Unelco a sus abonados a la fuerza, que somos (casi) todos. Ventajas del monopolio, igualito que con la manirrota Inalsa, que sigue haciendo aguas y estando a su vez con el agua al cuello (entre otras razones, por la deuda multimillonaria con la mencionada Unelco). Hablar de monopolios es tanto como decir que esto son arvejas; las tomas o las dejas.
Los cabildos de las dos islas más orientales y desorientadas de Canarias, las afectadas por aquel corte de fluido eléctrico como lo llaman en los informativos-, prometieron al momento que iban a pedirle explicaciones a la Compañía de marras. Un año después, ¿ustedes las han visto? Yo tampoco.
Unos días antes de aquel apagón nocturno de 2008, en la prensa de Gran Canaria se reproducían los testimonios, más o menos coincidentes, de numerosos testigos de otro fenómeno celestial: una bola de fuego que vio casi todo el mundo menos los teóricos observatorios oficiales cruzó el sur grancanario y acabó estrellándose en algún ignoto lugar, causando un gran estruendo. El mismo fenómeno fue visto a la misma hora (5 de la madrugada de un sábado) desde Fuerteventura, e incluso, con menos e intensidad y sin percibir sonido alguno, desde Lanzarote (el que esto firma también fue testigo ocular, por su fea manía de subir a San Bartolomé coincidiendo con el canto del gallo, una costumbre que me faculta para escribir largo y tendido sobre meteoritos, ovnis y lo que no está ni en los escritos).
Mucha gente duda de cualquier testimonio ofrecido por otra gente que llega a su casa a esas altas horas de la madrugada, y no les falta motivos para el escepticismo, a fe mía. Los más crédulos, o los que han visto mucha película (mala), se lanzan, al momento, a hablar de platillos volantes, gigantes y cabezudos siderales u otros fenómenos parasubnormales. Como es triste fama, las inteligencias poco capaces se interesan por lo extraordinario, mientras que las inteligencias poderosas se interesan por las cosas ordinarias. En el caso de Unelco, quienes andamos muy justitos de inteligencia nos conformaríamos con una simple no con otra simplona- explicación racional y medianamente creíble. Total, ganas de pedirle peras al olmo y duraznos a la rama de batatera. O tanto como pedir transparencia en la gestión de Inalsa, Centros Turísticos y por ahí seguidito.
